Microneedling Aftercare – Which Products? Exercise? Alcohol?
After the treatment, your skin is more sensitive because the tiny punctures are in the process of healing. For this reason, you can't follow your usual skincare routine, and some products need to be avoided in the first 2-3 days. These include exfoliators, glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids.
Retinoids (vitamin A) and vitamin C should also be avoided, alongside other products that contain harsh chemicals, fragrances and alcohol. Face cleaning brushes are not recommended for 7 days or longer after the skin needling treatment. This depends on the size of the needles used.
But what is allowed? In the following article, you will discover what products are recommended and which activities are restricted as part of your microneedling post-treatment.
What to use after dermarollers on your skin?
To protect your skin, you need to use only natural, organic products such as green tea oil. Apply the oil twice a day, after making sure your face and hands are clean. The green tea oil deeply moisturizes your skin, reducing the sensation of dryness.
This feeling of dry skin is also known as Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). It appears after the dermarolling procedure makes micro holes on your skin surface. This allows the body's natural fluids to leak out leaving the skin drier.
In this case, water-based products are not as efficient in hydrating the skin as the green tea oil (Buy Organic Green Tea Facial Oil) that naturally assists the healing process. You can mix the oil with a little water to make it easier to apply to the treated area.

Can you shower after microneedling?
Yes, showering is allowed post skin needling. It's recommended to take a luke-warm shower after a few hours and use a gentle cleanser, nothing abrasive. As opposed to baths, showers have a lower inflammatory or infection risk. Sitting in bathtub water after dermarolling can lead to bacterial infection.
Your skin may feel dry and sticky due to the natural moisture that appears on the top layer of the skin after the microneedling treatment. In some instances, when needles of 1.5 mm or longer are used, blood may also appear, which needs to be washed away.
We don't recommend using such long needles, especially for anti-ageing purposes and at home. It is better in these cases to stick to 0.5 mm skin needling rollers. (Buy 0.5mm Hypoallergenic Dermaroller)
Best sunscreen after microneedling?
Use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30. Opt for a zinc-based sun cream that stays on the skin's surface while blocking the UV rays. It also should be as natural and chemical-free as possible to avoid possible inflammation
Sunscreens that are easily absorbed in the healing skin should be avoided.
Usually, we don't recommend using sun creams in the first 24 hours after the dermarolling treatment. If this is not possible, then choose a cream with the specifications mentioned above.
Tanning after microneedling?
Tanning is not recommended. After microneedling, your skin will have a lower tolerance to sunlight for about 1 to 2 weeks or more, depending on the needles sizes. Steer clear of direct sun's rays as much as possible. If it can't be avoided, use SPF 50 or above.
These rules also apply to artificial tanning in salons. Dermarolling procedure can create photosensitivity. Because of this, your skin is more exposed to sunburns or skin damage after the treatment.
We recommend using sunscreen daily, even after the mandatory period has passed. It should be part of your skincare routine to avoid the ageing signs caused by the UV rays.
Exercise after microneedling?
It is best to avoid all sports or exercising that can cause excessive sweating. You are exposed to a higher risk of infection when the micro-wounds from your skin stay in prolonged contact with sweat. Depending on the size of the needles, you may need to wait 2-7 days.
If you performed the skin needling treatment with a 0.5 mm dermaroller, 2 days of waiting are enough. When longer needles are used, such as 1.5mm, exercising should be avoided for up to 7 days.
Swimming after microneedling?
Another practice you should put on hold after dermaroller treatment is swimming. The salted water from the sea may sting the damaged skin. At the same time, chlorinated pools are often high in bacteria. In both cases, the chances of developing a skin infection are increased.
Some side effects of swimming microneedling procedure may appear as an itchy rash. This skin reaction is rarely seen when smaller needles (0.5mm) are used. Nevertheless, swimming should be avoided in the first 48 hours post microneedling treatment.
Overall, try to limit the contact between your skin and external factors as much as possible, even if it affects daily activities. You could return to your routine when at least 3 days have passed after the treatment and more than 72 hours if the procedure was done with needles longer than 0.5mm.
Drinking alcohol after microneedling
Alcohol is not recommended in the first 24-48 hours post-treatment because it can cause skin flushing. Alcohol acts as a vasodilator which will worsen the blushing effect, especially if your skin is highly sensitive. Do not drink alcohol if you feel any dizziness, and contact your doctor.
Microneedling aftercare makeup
Makeup after dermarolling should be avoided in the first 24 hours. The products used for makeup can block your skin's pores and accentuate the risk of infection. Apply the smallest quantities possible in the first-week post microneedling to allow proper skin rejuvenation.
Makeup tools such as brushes to apply makeup can cause rashes, even more so, if they have been used before. Foundations or powders that use synthetic fragrances should also be avoided because they can increase the risk of skin infection.
The simple answer to, when can you wear makeup after microneedling is to wear as little as possible for the first week and try to avoid any products that may increase the risk of infection.
Jade roller after microneedling
You can use a jade roller after the microneedling treatment. A high-quality crystal roller is gentle to your skin, even if it is inflamed. White Lotus offers various natural and chemical-free jade facial rollers, which can cool the skin, especially if it feels hot after the dermarolling procedure.
When jade rolling on skin that has just received microneedling right after treatment it is important to understand that the jade roller should not then be shared with others. As part of the post dermaroller treatment care, it needs to be understood that any tools used on the skin have to be treated as though they have been exposed to blood even if none is present.
